IMEWE / LION / TEAMS Cable Route Surveys (Suez To South Africa,
Red Sea & Indian Ocean)
Alcatel-Lucent recently contracted EGS (Asia) Ltd
to undertake the work for performing IMEWE, LION and TEAMS
Marine Cable Route Survey.
India-Middle East-Western Europe (I-ME-WE) is a new submarine
cable network linking Mumbai in India to Marseille in France.
The system is approximately 13,000km long. EGS will undertake
the survey from Suez to Mumbai with links into Saudi Arabia,
Oman and Pakistan.
The Low Indian Ocean Network (LION) is the first fiber optic
cable linking Madagascar and Mayotte to the rest of the world
via the islands of Reunion and Mauritius. The LION system
is approximately 1,800km long and will link Mauritius, Reunion,
Madagascar, Mayotte and Kenya.
The East African Marine System (TEAMS) is an initiative spearheaded
by the government of Kenya to link the country to the rest
of the world through a submarine fiber optic cable. The cable
links Mombasa in Kenya to Fujairah in UAE. EGS already completed
the 4,500km route survey but due to the recent piracy activities
off Somalia it was decided to re-route the cable outside Somali
waters, a new survey campaign will start soon. •
MENA Extension Cable Route Survey, Red Sea
Tyco Telecommunications recently contracted EGS (Asia) Ltd
to undertake the work for performing MENA Extension Marine
Cable Route Survey between Saudi Arabian and Oman.

ASH, HONOTUA, FLAG Pacific, Tasman 3 Cable Route Surveys
(Pacific Ocean)
EGS has been awarded a major contract for Alcatel-Lucent.
This major contract comprises marine route surveys for the
HONOTUA, ASH, FLAG Pacific and Tasman 3 cables.
Australia-American Samoa-Hawaii (ASH) cable system will
also link New Zealand and Samoa.
The Honotua network will be composed of an international
link between Tahiti and Hawaii (4650 km) and a domestic
connection (305 km) linking some of the islands in the French
Polynesian archipelago.
The FLAG Pacific cable will link the west coast of the US
with Japan, China and Hong Kong.
Tasman 3 will link Australia to New Zealand.

Europe India Gateway (EIG) Submarine Cable System
Tyco Telecommunications recently contracted EGS (Asia) Ltd
to undertake the work for performing EIG Marine Cable Route
Survey between Egypt and India with landings in Saudi Arabia,
Djibouti, Oman and UAE.
EIG will connect three continents, with landings planned
in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Gibraltar, Monaco, France,
Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Oman, United Arab
Emirates, and India. Providing much needed diversity for
broadband traffic currently relying largely on traditional
routes from Europe to India, EIG will also provide seamless
interconnection with other major cable systems connecting
Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.

EASSy Submarine Cable System (East Africa)
EGS has been awarded the environmental impact assessment,
desktop study and marine cable route survey of the Eastern
Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) by Alcatel-Lucent.
EASSy is an initiative to connect countries of eastern Africa
via a high bandwidth fibre optic cable system to the rest
of the world. It is considered a milestone in the development
of information infrastructure in the region.
EASSy is planned to run from Mtunzini in South Africa to
Port Sudan in Sudan, with landing points in six countries,
and connected to at least five landlocked countries –
who will no longer have to rely on expensive satellite systems
to carry voice and data services.
The project, funded by the World Bank and the Development
Bank of Southern Africa, was initiated on January 2003.
