The application of engineering geophysical techniques to site investigations in Hong Kong

Abstract

Geophysics, as the name implies, is concerned with the physics of the earth. The science can be divided into four broad groups:

Pure geophysics: (the study of the structure and properties of the earth as a whole)
Mineral Prospecting: (the search for metaliferous and other non-carbon based resources)
Oil Prospecting: (the search for oil and related resources)
Engineering geophysics: (the application of geo-physical techniques to site investigation)

The use of geophysics under the fourth heading has found a growing application in Hong Kong and elsewhere through the steady improvement in instrumentation, and the ready availability of powerful desk top computers to assist with the reducy\tion of observations and interpretation. The application of these methods in Hong Kong has been extensive, such that a review of progress is now desirable, together with references to both successes and failures and an assesment of how improvements could be achieved in future.
