Mini CPT

Description

A Mini Cone Penetrometer Test (MCPT) is a cost effective method of measuring the geotechnical properties of a soil and is achieved by measuring tip resistance and sleeve friction of a thin rod that is forced into the soil.

Applications

Being easily deployed off a vessel of opportunity (with an "A" Frame), the MCPT is the ideal method of quantifying the geotechnical properties of the seabed. Data is provided on:

  • Tip Resistance
  • Sleeve Friction
  • Friction Ratio
  • Undrained Shear Strength
  • Relative density

In addition, if a piezocone is fitted then pore water measurements can be measured.

EGS has 2 Datem 3000 MCPT systems that are specified to operate to 3,000m water depth.

Comments

MCPT data combined with geophysics provides an ideal method of providing a continuous burial assessment of the seabed and is being used frequently on both submarine cable and oil/gas pipeline installations.
