Sampling

Description

Seabed sampling is crucial to provide samples to calibrate and quantify both geophysical and geotechnical surveying methods as well as provide material for environmental analyses. EGS operates a number of bottom sampling instruments including, grabs, gravity corers and vibrocorers.

Applications

Geophysical methods in particular, provide an acoustic facies of the seabed that needs to be checked against proper geological information. This information is obtained directly from the seabed in a number of methods including:

  • Grabs: Either Van Veen or Shipek type grabs
  • Gravity Corers: Standard 3m for offshore operations or 2m for inshore
  • Vibrocorers: Standard 3m or 6m for inshore operations

The core samples collected are photographed, logged, tested (by either Torvane or Mini Cone Penetrometer) and sampled onboard the survey vessel. Further sampling and geotechnical testing can be undertaken in the laboratory.

Comments

The collected samples are either analysed offshore by a geologist for their geological and geotechnical properties or alternately stored for in depth onshore laboratory analyses, which are dependent on the clients needs.
