Description
|
Local
variations to the background magnetism of the earth can be caused by
geological or man-made magnetic materials. These variations can be detected
using magnetometers or gradiometers.
|
|
Applications
|
Typical
applications include:
- location
of mine workings,
- archaeological
remains,
- unexploded
ordinance,
- some
geological features (for example dyke intrusions generally have a
substantial magnetic character.

|
Comments
|
Very
cost effective technique for locating artefacts; gradiometers generally
allow location of magnetic signatures in larger magnetic fields, for
example near large steel structures.
